Lisa's Background
Her scientific roots were deep, but her awakening over the last few years has been strong. Dr. Lisa A. Stanton holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of Richmond and a PhD in Social Psychology from University of Minnesota. Her expertise is in behavior change theory and applications. During graduate school, she was named the student advisory council chair for the Society for Health Psychology, a division of the American Psychological Association, and was a finalist for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. After finishing her PhD, she spent two years in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois where she completed a National Cancer Institute T32 post-doctoral research fellowship in Behavioral Cancer Prevention and Control. During graduate school and her postdoctoral fellowship, she taught or assisted in the teaching of 18 undergraduate and master’s-level courses. She has co-authored 30 academic publications and several encyclopedia entries and book chapters. She has spoken at numerous psychology conferences across the United States and in Europe. Before starting her most recent writing endeavors, she worked remotely for a year and a half as a researcher for a health technology start-up in Mountain View, California.
Despite her vast educational background, you will not find psychology nor behavior change theory in the solutions offered in the pages of upcoming 52 Life-Changing Lesson I Learned in Recovery, nor in her content on social media. Her recent writings are about her personal experiences in recovery from not only addiction, but also eating disorders, anxiety conditions, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, alopecia areata, and more. She writes about her journey from the belief that more scientific knowledge would solve all her problems to her experience that a relationship with God does so. These writings appear on her Instagram page @drlisastanton, which is loved by thousands of followers as well as her recently launch Substack page. Lisa currently lives in Minnesota with her husband. They share a love of service and spend their days helping others who are suffering, whether from addiction, eating disorders, or are just a person in need. Their favorite activities include sharing meals with friends and family, motorcycling on their own bikes and together on their side car motorcycle, heading year-round to ice-cream shops for dessert, and traveling—especially on cruises with silent discos and to see their many friends and family around the country and world.
